What is at-home literacy?
By: Leah Walker
Spitler Elementary’s Family at Home Literacy Events help parents take an active role in their child’s reading journey. Each event features a short video with simple, fun tips families can use to build strong literacy habits at home. After watching the video and completing a quick Google Form, students earn a book token for the school’s vending machine and an inspiREAding tips card to keep the learning going.
These events are part of our Title 1 Family Engagement program, designed to strengthen the home-to-school connection. As the at-home Literacy Director, Michelle Hansen explains, “When families and schools work together to support reading, children gain confidence, develop stronger skills, and discover a lifelong love for books.”
This has allowed children to excel in their literary abilities and show tremendous growth. It works its way through grades kindergarten through fourth grade and repeats throughout the school year. The next event is scheduled to take place during the first week of December for the 3rd and 4th grade classes.
