Hart Public Schools would like to share important information about upcoming changes to the youth work permit process for students under 18. Effective October 2nd, public schools across Michigan will no longer be able to supply students with work permits.
What Is Changing?
Michigan recently enacted legislation that will transition the state’s youth work permit system from the current school-based process to a centralized system administered by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO).
Beginning October 2, 2026, students will no longer obtain work permits through Hart High School or the HPS District Office. Instead, minors and employers will use the State of Michigan’s free centralized online system to apply for and process youth work permits.
Students and employers must use LEO’s Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP) to apply for and process work permits.
How to Apply for a New Work Permit
Step 1: Create a YEPP Account
Students will enter information, including:
-Personal and parent/guardian information
-School information, including school start and end times
-Employer information, including the employer’s address and the manager’s name
Step 2: Employer Completes Their Section
YEPP will notify the employer, who will provide information about the student’s job duties, wage, work hours, and shifts.
Step 3: State Review
The State of Michigan will review the information submitted by the student and employer.
Schools will not need to approve the permit.
Step 4: Permit Approved
Once the permit is approved, the student and employer will be notified. The work permit will be active in YEPP.

The Feeding America Food Truck, in partnership with United Way of the Lakeshore, will have its mobile food pantry distribution at Spitler Elementary on Friday, Sept. 18th, from 5-6:30 PM

The summer is coming to a close and we are gearing up for another exciting year at HHS. Fall sports will be kicking off soon and registration is right around the corner.
Please take a look at the graphic included with this post. It refers to some changes for the upcoming school year. Specifically regarding Electronic Communication Devices. We will have some new expectations. These have been developed in response to new legislation recently passed.
There will be more posts coming regarding this, but I wanted to get this out so you could start discussing and digesting these expectations.
Our office opened on Monday, and I will be around school if there are any questions. Feel free to reach out anytime.
Registration dates are August 17th and 18th, and they're coming up quickly.
